Maybe the answer is that information ought to be inherently patent- and copyright-free, but in order to protect the continued progression of humanity as a whole, those who frequently come up with good ideas, music, artistry, and so on should be subsidized by the government and/or voluntarily donated to by the public at large. Then authors and musicians and such would have their daily bread (or maybe caviar) and the rest of the world would benefit by the free flow of information. In order to ensure that the money would go to the right people, that they would have incentive to continue their information production, and that general confusion wouldn't ensue, a virtually unchangeable digital signature could be embedded in every work.Alex Gunnarsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15636368377787720843noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2338841281806045200.post-38589878534192627332010-09-29T07:54:13.565-06:002010-09-29T07:54:13.565-06:00After reading a bit of the Wired article and deali...After reading a bit of the Wired article and dealing with a bit of counterintuitive concepts, I can see now how certain things would be able to be given away for free. If the product is cheap enough to manufacture (i.e. at virtually no cost), it's actually *more* profitable to utilize the product as a form of advertisement for a different product, even if only a small profit is made on the product actually being sold for money.Alex Gunnarsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15636368377787720843noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2338841281806045200.post-6325744667147744662010-09-28T22:31:02.539-06:002010-09-28T22:31:02.539-06:00Most of us have grown up in an age that we don'...Most of us have grown up in an age that we don't really know how to barter. Online consumer reports and e-stores allow no human interaction, but also allows smaller products a chance. I doubt Adam Smith could have dreamed of the markets that exist today, but he would accept them as the best, because they have been guided by the invisible hand.Trevorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04905093224199422306noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2338841281806045200.post-2176769599256351122010-09-28T01:01:21.970-06:002010-09-28T01:01:21.970-06:00I think it's interesting too that our economy ...I think it's interesting too that our economy (Amazon was mentioned) is better able to support obscure projects and options. Some big debates back in the day were (and are to this day) over monopolies, monopolies which often formed because one person or company would make a very viable product and so other smaller companies couldn't make a small profit on their less popular product. (I'm thinking specifically of the OS2 v. Windows wars in the '90s.) But these days, there are enough options that obscure products don't have to feel that way. We don't have to buy only mainstream because if a company has only one thing that sells mainstream, it can afford to support less lucrative (yet still cool) projects on the side. It's interesting to see.jakydigicivhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18443203160644567212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2338841281806045200.post-60558702337167092912010-09-28T01:01:05.469-06:002010-09-28T01:01:05.469-06:00Andrew-Thanks for adding the link to the forum.
